Hello, everyone! It's been a year since my last STARGLIDER newsletter, and I apologize for that. I don't want to lose touch with any of you! Many of you have written to ask what's up lately, and I've tried to answer each piece of email and each letter individually. With or without the newsletter, I'd do that anyway. You're important to me. It's been a wild and crazy year in many ways, and there's lots of news. So read on! ========================== A number of you have written to ask where the third DRAGONKIN novel is. It was due to be released this month, May. Well, the book is finished and in the hands of the publisher, and more than that I cannot say. I'm hoping for a release later this year, and hopefully the wait won't be too long. The title, by the way, is DRAGONKIN: UNDERSKY. You'll see it listed on Amazon.com as DRAGONKIN: SANCTUARY, but that title is not the final title. It's UNDERSKY. For updates or more information about Book Three, watch my website, http://home.earthlink.net/~robinwaynebailey, or check the publisher's website at www.ibooksinc.com Meanwhile, the paperback edition of Book Two, DRAGONKIN: TALISMAN has just hit the bookstores. And both the first and the second volumes remain available in hardback. So don't delay - Buy My Books! (Thank you, Selina Rosen, wherever you are!) ========================= The latest anthology from THIEVES WORLD is called THIEVES WORLD: ENEMIES OF FORTUNE, in hardback from Tor Books. This contains the first humorous story I've ever attempted in this milieu. It's called "Protection," and features Spider and Aliyah, the characters I introduced in my story in THIEVES WORLD: TURNING POINTS (available now in paperback from Tor). It also introduces one of the most inept, bungling thieves ever to try to do business in Sanctuary. I mean, this guy couldn't steal his blind mother's old underwear while she was sleeping! I had a great time writing this story, and I hope you'll have a good time reading it. ================================= "Shin-Gi-Tai" is Japanese for "mind, body, spirit," and is the title for my upcoming story in the Daw anthology, WOMEN AT WAR, edited by Tanya Huff. It's due for a July release. It's a science fiction tale of tragic lovers who go to extreme lengths to end a centuries-long war between two star-spanning branches of Humanity. This is the only short story I expect to see published in 2005, and I rather regret not making time for more short fiction. I enjoy the short forms and enjoy the versatility of themes and subject matter short fiction allows. I've got a couple of new ones in various stages on the computer, but they won't be done soon. > =========================================== Over the course of a couple of months last summer and fall, I granted a rather in-depth interview to fan and fellow-writer, Peter Welmerick. Peter hosts a neat website dedicated to heroic fantasy, and that can be found, along with a lot of cool stuff, at www.highfantasy.iwarp.com. Originally posted in four parts, the entire interview is now available there. I talk a lot about writing, getting started, the state of the genre, and all that. Go forth and explore! You'll find a link to High Fantasy Online on my website, too. And thank you, Peter. That was a good time. ============================================ As many of you know by now, we merged the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame into the Seattle-based Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame last year. It's been a spectacularly successful marriage, and the first new induction ceremony was held just a few weeks ago in the museum's gorgeous "Sky Church," amid laser lights and digital spectacle. I was delighted to be on hand and to be one of the speakers. Robert Picardo, the holographic doctor from STAR TREK: VOYAGER, served as emcee as we inducted writer Philip K. Dick, artist Chesley Bonestell, special effects genius Ray Harryhausen, and producer-director Steven Spielberg. They join 36 authors and editors previously inducted. As you can see, this marked the first time we've inducted folks from the world of media. The gala banquet and ceremonies were spectacular with writers, artists, editors, movie people, educators, and politicians all rubbing elbows and enjoying the evening. I'm as pleased as I can be to continue serving on the Hall of Fame's Executive Committee and to chair its Induction Committee. The museum's staff are good folks who love our genre, and if you're in Seattle or have a chance to visit, be sure to stop by the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, check out their website at www.sfhomeworld.org. You won't be sorry. ================================================= Earlier this February, I received an ominous call from the Election Committee of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. A dark voice at the other end of the line urged me to run for High Office, and though I resisted for several weeks, I eventually succumbed to its power and agreed to run. The short form: I won the election. As of July 1st, I will become president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Wish me luck. And by the way, check out the SFWA website for all sorts of information and news. It's www.sfwa.org. ============================== If any of you plan to attend the Nasfic "Cascadia-Con" in Seattle September 1-5 this year, don't forget to look me up! You'll meet more writers, artists, and fans than you can shake a stick at (love those cliches!), and you'll have a great time. Massive dealers room, of course, and always a fantastic art show, as well as panels, receptions, and the usual. Find more information on this event at www.cascadiacon.org. For those of you in the midwest, or at least the Missouri/Kansas area, I'll also be taking part in the John W. Campbell Conference on the campus of the University of Kansas, Lawrence the weekend of July 9-10. This is a terrific event sponsored by James Gunn's Center for the Study of Science Fiction. I don't have their website url on hand, but google it. It's an excellent site with a wealth of information. Also attending the conference will be James Gunn, Frederick Pohl, Pat Cadigan, Bradley Denton, Kij Johnson, Ann Zeddies, and more. ======================= Whew! Looking back over this, it doesn't really capture the pure craziness of the past few months. Just this month alone, I've been in Seattle, St. Louis, Omaha, and Phoenix. I've given interviews to a number of newspapers, appeared as a guest on NPR's "On Point" radio program, and also on a Florida-based science fiction radio show who's name is eluding me at the moment, but it was great, chaotic fun. In addition to all that, I upgraded to broadband, and I went wireless. And I outlined a brand new hard-edged fantasy trilogy that I hope to be pitching to my agent later this summer. I didn't seem to attend as many conventions this past year, but I gave more speeches and presentations to more library groups and clubs. And I made lots and lots of new friends. What more can one ask? My next task is to update my website. I only need a couple of more hours in a day! But keep an eye out for new material there. A fresh list of upcoming appearances; maybe a more recent photo; maybe some new links to interesting websites; maybe even a story - maybe even an original never-before-published story. (Hmmm, will I have to pay myself by the word?) And for those who've asked, my health remains good and the cancer remains in remission. I haven't broken any bones recently, either, and the arm healed nicely. I continue to lift weights (my passion), practice martial arts, and bike as often as I can. And I've become addicted to the old-time radio programs, particularly the science fiction and mystery shows, available on the internet radio site, www.live365.com. If you haven't discovered that site, go there now! So that's about it. I hope this newsletter finds all of you well and prospering and reading and buying as many books as you can afford and generally enjoying life. Don't hesitate to drop a line when you can - you're all special to me, and I appreciate your friendship and support. I look forward to hearing from you, and maybe even to seeing you soon - Somewhere Down the Road. And as always, please feel free to forward this to any readers or fans you think might be interested. Best wishes, Robin Wayne Bailey
